Well the 4 Corners show at Roundhouse Gallery was one that was preceded with much anticipation. Driving past the gallery everyday on my way home from work, the blinds were always drawn which left me feeling like I was trying to peak in my parents closet for presents before Christmas. Once that show went on, it was clear the owners Andrew and Brooke Lee have something amazing going on in St. Petersburg, FL.
“4 Corners” was an installation show. Installations are a beast of their own in the art world. Preparation, vision, timing, space. All not so easy to accommodate physically or mentally. Roundhouse did it and did it well. From local artist Frank Strunk III’s “Plyworld” that was ingenious, from the hand sanded antennae for the the television, to the pack of smokes, ash tray, and wooden lighter. The second I saw these pieces, I knew time, thought and effort were put into this installation. BASK’s 10 Year Retrospective installation was an eye stealing view of not only his vision but what one person can accomplish through their different perspectives over time. Between color and detail of each piece his corner exploded. Anthony Zollo had an interesting corner where it seemed shards of plywood were thrown by a tornadoe into the wall. I chose to look at it from many different views underneath, from the sides, from behind. Each view taking on a whole different feel for the piece. Well done! Then there was Gali Nieves piece, which not only presented a feel of elegance but also made you think of the connections between well the interconnected installation that began from a plywood window and ended with a maze of string hanging in the gallery front window, everything in between was genius in it’s own right.
