Pintura Project

The graffiti diaspora has its springtime Orlando ritual: the Pintura Project, which brings together graffiti artists from around town, as well as the world. For the last two years, we’ve sung the praises of the wild explosions of color and creativity that take over Robin Van Arsdol’s warehouses on Central Avenue in Parramore. Aside from the fact that you’re watching spray-can specialists do what they normally do in secret under the cover of darkness, it’s a wholesome affair that draws a crowd of spectators from diverse cultural corners.

So we’re here to officially sound the alert that the third annual Pintura Project gathering, scheduled for April 24, is endangered because of the lack of the color green. Organizer Angel Carreras is trying to pull it together, but $1,500 in donations or sponsorships is desperately needed to kick it into gear. It’s never been a moneymaker, but the graffiti created on the spot is fierce, and even global travelers have said they have never seen anything like it. To help out, contact RV at 407-929-4161 or via www.rvbadjet.com.

Oh, and about the city’s Keep Orlando Beautiful Graffiti Task Force? They actually like graffiti, as long as it’s on private property. And truly, what’s not to like? Take a look at what happened last year.

Sally Evans and Heather Sooder at Dog & Friends

Evans and Sooder Art Exhibit at Dog & Friends

April 15, 2010 – Dog & Friends will host an opening reception for artists Sally Evans and Heather Sooder. Dog & Friends offers natural pet food, supplements, toys and accessories. The reception will be from 6-9pm and is free and open to the public as part of the Downtown Third Thursdays event.

“Sally Evans and Heather Sooder make an excellent pair of artists for exhibit”, says curator Brad Biggs. “Evans’ bold, bright, colorful canvases and Sooder’s soulful sculptures bring an artistic depth to the subject of animals.”

With a BFA in Graphic Design and Fine Art from the University of South Carolina, Sally Evans’ award-winning acrylic paintings are inspired by colors in the strong Florida sunlight, and her impressionistic landscapes and pet portraits have received nationwide acclaim. Evans, who is a guest instructor at Crealdé, will be featuring a new series depicting dogs in this show.

Heather Sooder’s sculptures have appeared in numerous local exhibits. “’Best Friends’ – seemingly a pair of unearthed dachsund bodies poignantly posed together” was praised in a recent show, Prima Materia, by Orlando Weekly Art Critic Richard Reep.

For more information, contact Curators Brad Biggs or Jason L Lee of The Arts Hub Florida. The Arts Hub provides artist representation, custom art placement, promotion, and curatorial services to regional artists, merchants, and galleries. You may contact Brad Biggs at 407-247-4552 or Jason L Lee at 321-662-9073, or via email at theartshubfl@aol.com.

Sit-In for Artistic Freedom and 1st Amendment Rights Rally Today from 12pm – 3pm @ Riverfront Park in Washington

Sit-In for Artistic Freedom and 1st Amendment Rights Rally

I wanted to tell you all that I went into the STA Bus Plaza in Spokane at about 11:30 Tuesday morning, Feb. 16th. I sat down just inside on the benches at the Riverside entrance. I opened my guitar case and began to play my acoustic guitar UNAMPLIFIED. I began singing to myself UNAMPLIFIED. Within a couple minutes folks began coming by and listening, seemingly enjoying the music. I got lots of smiles and some nice comments.

Within the space of a couple songs, I had drawn a small following of about 8 or 10 folks. The security guards came by and stopped me, saying that I needed a “performer’s permit” to play inside the building.

Upstairs, I was told that I had to fill out a 3-page questionnaire, provide a “demo CD” for audition purposes, and wait until he got back to me.

He went on to say that the only area in which live music is permitted is upstairs in the rotunda area at the top of the escalator AND said that after February 22nd, the area would no longer be available for music AT ALL until September. I turned in the application anyway.

This crap is ridiculous. I wasn’t disturbing the peace, I was contributing to it. I was stopped for no real reason. If I need to hustle my albums in a warm, dry place during a rainstorm, I ought to be able to go into a public forum and do so respectfully and responsibly. That’s what I did.

We are independent musicians. It’s what we do. We deserve to be able to use public places like The Bus Plaza, Riverfront Park, and the streets to play in a manner by which we can be heard.

For those of us who’ve invested in recording equipment, produced our own work, created our own art, and want to sell it… let’s band together and agree that these prohibitions are WRONG.

We have the opportunity to turn the downtown area into a rich music and arts district if we’ll allow the artists a REAL PLACE to been seen during daytime hours downtown. You know what? Letting musicians play downtown might be one helluva way to put a small dent in the 11%+ UNEMPLOYMENT RATE we all so richly enjoy. It wouldn’t hurt tourism, either.

I encourage everyone to bring your instrument, artwork, craft work, tip cup, and peaceful heart.

There will be NO PHYSICAL CONFRONTATIONS. This event will very likely have national/international coverage, so hopefully our already-embattled Spokane police force will want to put it’s best foot forward.

Our goal is to send a mature, sincere, and direct message to the leaders of our city. Set the arts free in downtown and all public forums in Spokane.

The spirit of Dr. King will be observed. Peaceful, civil disobedience.

Thanks for listening,

Tommy G
