The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) presents Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey opening on Friday, August 13, 2010, and continuing through Halloween. The exhibition features original illustrations, preparatory sketches, unpublished drawings and ephemera by master illustrator and author Edward Gorey. An illustrated catalogue with an essay by Gorey scholar Karen Wilkin accompanies the exhibition.

Elegant Enigmas pays tribute to the work of Edward Gorey (1925-2000), best known for his brilliant drawings and witty, offbeat stories. Described as “incredibly sophisticated…stylish and inventive” by the New York Observer, Gorey’s signature pen-and-ink illustrations and his unique wit has led him to be considered one of America’s most imaginative and eccentric creative artists. Elegant Enigmas includes approximately 170 objects drawn primarily from the Edward Gorey Charitable Trust, featuring selections from such well-known publications as The Gashlycrumb Tinies, The Doubtful Guest, The Unstrung Harp and The Gilded Bat, among others.
The OMA is located in Orlando Loch Haven Park at 2416 North Mills Ave., Orlando, Fla. From I-4 take the Princeton Street exit 85. Drive east on Princeton Street, and at the corner of Princeton and Mills (US Highway 17 / 92), turn left. Go one block to east Rollins Street and turn left. The entrance is the first driveway on the left. Parking is free. For further information, call 407 896 4231 or visit www.omart.org.

OPEN GRASS STARTED AS A REACTION AGAINST FILTERS (?) YES, FILTERS BETWEEN US AND MUSIC AND ART, THOSE FILTERS BEING COMMERCIAL RADIO AND TV, CONVENTIONAL GALLERIES, BIG RECORD LABELS AND BAR OWNERS THAT WOULD DECIDE WHO PLAY IN THEIR PLACES ACCORDING TO WHO WOULD SELL MORE BEER DISREGARDING THE QUALITY OF THE MUSIC.I HAVE HEARD THAT EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO AN OPINION; I SAY AS LONG AS YOU MAKE YOUR OWN OPINION AND DONT TAKE IT FROM MASS MEDIA WHO IS TRYING TO MANIPULATE YOUR TASTE TO SELL YOU A PRE-FAB PRODUCT, WITH NO SOUL. REMOVE THE FILTERS, DONT LET ANYTHING BETWEEN YOU AND EXPRESSION. GO SEE LIVE MUSIC, IT DOES NOT GET ANY MORE DIRECT THAN THAT. YOU IN FRONT OF THE MUSICIANS PLAYING THEIR MUSIC FOR YOU. LOOK FOR SMALL STUDIOS OF ARTISTS AND SEE THEIR WORK BEFORE BECOMES COMMERCIALIZED.WE ALSO STARTED AS A WAY TO BRING “THE FAMILY” TOGETHER ONCE IN A WHILE TO ENJOY ALL THOSE “OLD HIPPIE VALUES” LIKE PEACE & LOVE AND ADD MUSIC & ART TO THE EQUATION. SO I HOPE WE WILL SEE EACH OTHER IN THE NEXT SHOW, CONCERT, FESTIVAL OR EXHIBITION, AND WHEN WE GREET EACH OTHER, DO IT WITH A SMILE, A HUG AND A COUPLE OF KIND WORDS (LIKE “OPEN GRASS”).COME OUT, SMILE, RELAX, FEEL THE LOVE AND THE PEACE FLOATING IN THE AIR, FILL YOUR SENSES WITH THE COLORS AND SOUNDS AROUND YOU, LET THEM SURROUND YOU, ENJOY AND SHARE THE FEELING WITH EVERYONE AROUND YOU, BECOME A CONCIOUS PIECE OF THE UNIVERSE, SHARE YOUR SOUL WITH THE WORLD

Making Waves
Anthony Friedkin
Stephanie Ramer
May 20th – June 27th, 2010
Opening Reception Thursday, May 20th , 7-10pm

drkrm/gallery/west is pleased to present Making Waves, an exhibition featuring photographer Anthony Friedkin and painter Stephanie Ramer, two artists using different mediums to address the same subject matter, ocean waves.
Anthony Friedkin has said of his black and white photographs “Waves are like liquid sculpture, they move with dynamic force and ethereal beauty; they symbolize our universe by displaying mystical forms of energy. Each wave, like a bolt of lightening, is unique. Ocean swells can travel thousands of miles before releasing their tremendous power on our beaches.”
Stephanie Ramer uses oil pastels to capture in intimate scale “that critical moment of transition where the wave is breaking”. She focuses her attention on the pocket of the wave or the eye of the storm, which she describes as being “both empty of the chaos and right smack in the middle of it”.
Each medium brings a different element to the representation of waves. Friedkin’s photographs identify a very specific wave that has existed in a single moment of time. Ramer’s pastels, while specific, involve an element of imagination that does not exist in a photograph. Both artists, as surfers, have a deep appreciation for the ocean and an understanding of the uniqueness of each wave.

Come out for opening night on May 15th, 2010 at 7:30pm. Live painting session, music, and drinks. Free Admission.

Canvases and sketches from Berlin Graffiti Artists will be lining the walls of Raw Vibes Art & Performance space. Exhibit hours are from Monday, May 17th to Friday, May 21st 11:00am-3:00pm.
Presenting graffiti art in the Berlin Style Writing exhibition.
Berlin is fast growing as the European hub for artistic expression and a leading factory in unconventional and forward thinking art forms, allowing for the flourishing of graffiti art. Although the graffiti roots did not start in Berlin, it has become implanted within the culture. From the protest and memorial graffiti on the doomed Berlin Wall to the expressionistic graffiti today, this art form is part of the everyday life of Berliners. Having had many style influences, mainly old school New York, artists in Berlin have developed their own distinctive flair over the years that can easily be recognized worldwide.
This special exhibition brings together a collection of works representing the art form that has made its way internationally, through the streets, to the galleries, on our clothes and in today’s music. These artists have been chosen for their ability to spin lines, letters, colors, and characters into a visually exciting abstract experience. Some of these artist have over twenty years of experience, building their reputation on their skills and distinctive style.
The Berlin Style Writing exhibition will introduce the US to a truly modern art form with an international twist. This exhibition will make its debut at Raw Vibes Art & Performance Space in St. Petersburg, FL on May 15th, 2010.
